MPAC has released a new guide to help municipal candidates and newly elected councillors better understand the role of MPAC and the relationship between property assessment and taxation in Ontario. See below for a message from MPAC:

In the lead-up to municipal elections this fall, the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) has released About MPAC and Ontario’s Assessment System. Clear and concise, the new guide is designed to help municipal election candidates and newly elected councillors understand the relationship between property assessment and taxation in Ontario, as well as MPAC’s four-year assessment cycle.

Key points include:

  • MPAC is an independent, not-for-profit corporation funded by Ontario municipalities whose role is to assess and classify all properties in Ontario

  • MPAC, the provincial government and municipalities have distinct and different roles in Ontario’s property assessment and taxation system

  • MPAC updates Ontario’s property assessments every four years, phasing in increases in assessed value and immediately applying decreases in assessed value

The new council term presents a great opportunity to help reinforce MPAC’s role and the relationship between property assessment and taxation for all municipal council candidates.
