Many Ontario schools are working with their local municipalities to plan activities that will promote a better understanding and awareness about the operations and services of their municipality, and foster in children and youth, responsible citizenship and stewardship of their local communities.
Some of the suggested activities include: • Tours of municipalities by local schools children and citizens • Invite municipal staff and elected officials to visit your school • Hold a mock municipal election, or mock municipal referendum in your school • Work with your municipality to develop a Mayor For A Day program
Learning about local government can open the door to a wealth of learning opportunities for children and youth, developing knowledge and skills for students in a range of subject areas such as: civics, math, economics, geography, English, business, science, writing, information technology, careers and general research.
