Municipal Law Unit 1: Introduction to Municipal Law
This course looks at key legislation relating to municipalities and discusses and applies the rules of statutory interpretation. A major portion of the course is devoted to municipal by-laws - drafting, enactment and enforcement. Legal requirements relating to municipal records, including the impact of Freedom to Information legislation are also discussed. After taking this course, you'll know when to talk to a lawyer!

Municipal Law Unit 2: Torts
The concept of torts is introduced in this unit. It examines possible municipal liability in relation to enforcement, public works, and recreation activities. As well, attention is paid to the matter of elected officials and their exposure to liability as a result of their actions. Remedies required of the municipality if found liable, limitation periods for tort actions, and liability insurance are also discussed. The course concludes with an examination of statements of claim against municipalities and how to respond to them.

Municipal Law Unit 3: Contracts
The principles of contract law are introduced and examined in areas such as tendering, construction, consultant services, information technology and sale of goods. You will learn how to identify the basic components, write a simple formal contract, and identify situations in which an enforceable contractual relationship may arise.

Municipal Law Unit 4: Land Related Law
Municipal responsibilities regarding land acquisition, liens against land, the Planning Act are discussed, and basic real estate concepts introduced.
