Surviving & Thriving in 2019: Local Government Ethics in a Time of Populist Leadership, Trumpian

Surviving & Thriving in 2019: Local Government Ethics in a Time of Populist Leadership, Trumpian

This workshop will explore ways that municipal staff can remain professionally engaged, offer independent/objective advice “without fear or favour”, and increase their political acumen – all the while maintaining course with their moral compass aimed towards the municipality’s and AMCTO’s ethical values.

What You Will Learn:

  • Speaking “truth to power” when it really matters
  • Addressing real-life examples of when your ethics are tested by Council, the local community and (sometimes) even your peers

Why Attend:
An opportunity to revisit/replenish your ethical values and learn key ways to maintain them in the current municipal world

Who Should Attend:
Anyone who deals with elected officials and residents in Local Government

About the Instructor:
A “recovering” lawyer and the longest serving clerk at the amalgamated City of Ottawa, Rick O’Connor has spent his entire professional career in municipal government.  After more than three decades on the local scene, Rick continues to be a passionate advocate in support of a professional and independent local government public service.  A reasonable popular speaker and occasional writer (see 2019’s Ontario’s Municipal Conflict of Interest Act: A Handbook), look for Rick’s next book later this year entitled, The TAO: Transparent, Accountable & Open Local Government.
