Tyler Cox, MA, CMO, AOMC, Dipl.M.A.
Manager, Legislative Services, City of Ottawa
Hi! Bonjour! Kwey!
My name is Tyler Cox and I am proud to seek re-election as your Zone 6 representative on AMCTO's Board of Directors!
My career in municipal government began more than two decades ago as a summer student in the City of Ottawa’s Planning Department (on loan to the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority). Since that time, I have taken on various, progressive responsibilities, including 15 years in the Office of the City Clerk.
In my current role, I am the Manager of Legislative Services in the Office of the City Clerk. Over the last several years, I have been responsible for a variety of service areas: Committee and Council Services, Council Support Services, Mayor Support Services, Information Management, the City of Ottawa Archives, the Municipal Elections Office, and the Corporate Accessibility Office. Also, since 2020, I have served as a Deputy Clerk to City Clerk Rick O’Connor.
Like many of you, for several years I dedicated my Sunday afternoons to completing courses on parliamentary procedure and later those required for the Diploma in Municipal Administration. In 2018, I proudly earned my Certified Municipal Officer (CMO) designation. Last year, I was equally proud to become an Accredited Ontario Municipal Clerk (AOMC).
My election to the Board in 2021 was preceded by several years of volunteering with AMCTO, which I have listed at the bottom of this answer.
I hold degrees in political science from Carleton University and the University of Ottawa, along with a Master's Certificate in Municipal Leadership from the Schulich School of Business. I am currently a part-time MBA student at the Sprott School of Business.
I enjoy volunteering with AMCTO, the Institute of Public Administration of Canada (IPAC). I also enjoy coaching little league baseball and minor hockey.
Please connect with me on LinkedIn, where I actively post about various local government matters, including job opportunities and other happenings in “Mighty Zone 6!" (linkedin.com/in/tylercoxottawa)
Thanks,
Tyler

Why do you want to serve on the AMCTO Board?
I have a deep, long-standing commitment to both our Association and Zone 6.
Over the last two years, I have worked hard to make you proud by being an active participant in our Board and Zone 6 meetings, along with other AMCTO activities. As noted above, my election to the Board was a "natural progression" following several years of volunteering with AMCTO.
In keeping with my commitments in the last election, I have repeatedly advocated for greater equity and inclusion, along with more openness and transparency, in all of AMCTO’s initiatives. I am proud that we have achieved progress in these areas, including more policy discussion and awareness around DEI issues and a more transparent Board election process.
If re-elected, I promise to continue pursuing these goals.
Above all, I would be honoured to continue to serve our wonderful, diverse, (and mighty!) Zone 6.
What three skills do you possess that will greatly contribute to the AMCTO Board?
1. Organizational Knowledge and Experience - I am a long-time volunteer with AMCTO and an experienced board member. I am well-versed in AMCTO's mandate, its program offerings, and its governance. I also remain well-connected with my colleagues in Zone 6 and proudly bring their voice to the Boardroom table.
2. Leadership and Business Acumen - I am a seasoned manager with diverse strategic and operational experience. I have considerable training in leadership and management. I am also a part-time MBA student at the Sprott School of Business, where I have completed several courses in strategy, accounting, and other business courses.
3. A Champion for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion - I have been recognized for my leadership with respect to diversity, equity, and inclusion in organizations. Below I have highlighted some of my accomplishments in this area.
AMCTO is striving to become a more diverse and inclusion organization. How do you feel you can support AMCTO in achieving this goal?
I have a strong "track record" for championing greater diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).
For the last seven years, I have managed the City of Ottawa's Corporate Accessibility Office. Every day we work to make City services more accessible for people with disabilities, including residents, employees, and visitors.
In 2019, I was the proud recipient of the “Francophile of the year” award (Laurier d'allié de la francophonie de l’année) at the 19th Gala des prix Bernard Grandmaître in recognition for my work with Ottawa’s francophone community.
In the last few years, I have been proud to make contributions to the City of Ottawa's strategies with respect to gender equity, anti-racism, and Reconciliation.
As chair of AMCTO's Legislative and Policy Advisory Committee, I have been honoured to begin all meetings with a Land Acknowledgment to recognize that the work of our members takes place on traditional Indigenous land across Ontario.
At a Board level, I have been proud to repeatedly raise DEI issues at Board meetings. As a result, you may have noticed a considerable increase in AMCTO's awareness and communications around the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005.
I hope to continue to advocate and support AMCTO with its DEI journey. I also look forward to assisting AMCTO in making more DEI resources available to members.
