Legislature Rises for Holiday Break

Last week Queen's Park wrapped up its fall sitting and rose for the holiday break. Before leaving the legislature passed a number of important bills with municipal implications, including: 

Bill 139, the Building Better Communities and Conserving Watersheds Act will introduce broad reforms to Ontario’s land use planning regime. 

Bill 148, the Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act will raise Ontario’s minimum wage to $15, mandate equal pay for part-time, temporary, casual and seasonal work, and extend personal emergency leave for all employees, amongst other measures.

Bill 160, the Strengthening Quality and Accountability for Patients Act, amends the Ambulance Act to expand the scope of practices for paramedics, establish fire-medic pilot projects and implement a number of changes to the Retirement Homes Act

Bill 174, the Cannabis, Smoke-Free Ontario and Road Safety Statute Law Amendment Act will enact the province’s plan for legalizing recreational cannabis. 

Bill 177, the Stronger, Fairer Ontario Act has a series of implications for municipalities that collect Provincial Offences Act fines.

When they return in the New Year, MPPs will continue to debate the following bill: 

Bill 175, the Safer Ontario Act, is currently being debated for second reading. The bill would introduce a broad set of reforms to policing and community safety.
