Climate Alliance Warns Municipalities to Bear Brunt of Cap-and-Trade Cancellation

An alliance of environmental groups is warning that Ontario's municipalities will face the greatest consequences of the government's decision to cancel its cap-and-trade program. According to the Urban Climate Alliance, "the province's cap-and-trade withdrawal leaves Ontario cities in a difficult position. With such a large funding gap, cities will struggle to continue ambitious climate program commitments using their limited tax base." Proceeds from cap-and-trade were used for a number of municipal programs including retrofitting social housing, purchasing electric buses, and building more pedestrian- and cycling-friendly streets.
