FCM Seeking Federal Gas Tax Fund to Permanently Double

2019-07-29 10:05:34 AM

Last week, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) called on every federal political party to commit to permanently doubling the value of the annual federal Gas Tax Fund (GTF) transfer.

To build off the momentum of 2019’s federal budget one-time doubling of GTF, FCM is calling for a permanent doubling of the transfer, in addition to boosting GTF’s annual growth index, from 2 percent to 3.5, to better reflect economic growth and rising construction costs.

Currently, the GTF only accounts for 2% of municipal revenues with a growing list of unfunded infrastructure projects. A doubled GTF would mean supporting the renewal of core infrastructure, such as roads, waste and transit systems, through the delivery of predictable funds to communities of all sizes across the country.
