Government Opens Applications for Rural Economic Development Program

The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) today opened applications for its cost-sharing funding program, the Rural Economic Development (RED) program. The fund supports activities which create strong rural communities and the opportunity of rural economic development in the province.

The fund specifically:

  • Addresses barriers to economic development to better position rural communities to attract and retain jobs, investment, and enhance economic growth;

  • Builds community capacity and support for economic development in Ontario’s rural communities; and

  • Invests in rural communities to help diversify and grow local economies.

RED will be supporting projects in two streams:

  • Economic Diversification and Competitiveness Stream: involves projects that remove barriers to business and job growth, attract investment, attract or retain a skilled workforce, strengthen sector and regional partnerships and diversify regional economies, such as service delivery improvement.

    • 50% of eligible costs will be funded to a maximum of $150,000

  • Strategic Economic Infrastructure Stream: involves minor capital projects that advance economic development and investment opportunities, such as the rehabilitation of cultural, heritage or tourism attractions.

    • 30% of eligible costs will be funded to a maximum of $250,000

To be eligible to apply for RED you must be:

  • A municipality

  • A not-for-profit entity

  • An Ontario indigenous community or organization

  • A local services board
