Safer Ontario Act Proclamation Dates Announced

The government has announced the proclamation dates for the Safer Ontario Act. The Safer Ontario Act introduces a series of reforms to policing and public safety in Ontario. The Act has been proclaimed and the in-force date set for January 1, 2020. Other key provisions of the legislation will be implemented as follows: 

June 30, 2018
Changes related the Ontario Special Investigations Unit (OSIU)

October 1, 2018
All special constables will become subject to the jurisdiction of the Ontario Special Investigations Unit (OSIU)

January 1, 2020
Changes related to the establishment of the Ontario Policing Complaints Agency and the Ontario Policing Discipline Tribunal 

January 1, 2021
Deadline for adopting Community Safety and Well-being Plans 

Forthcoming regulations
According to AMO, over 150 regulations will be proposed to implement the Act, including details related to the consolidation of OPP boards
