On March 4th 2021, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Steve Clark and Minister of Finance and President of the Treasury Board, Peter Bethlenfalvy announced $500 million to support operating pressures faced by 444 municipalities as a result of COVID-19 in 2021.
Interestingly, the allocations are based on a combination of a base amount using Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) household data and an amount based on the proportion of provincial COVID-19 cases (from January 1, 2021 to February 18, 2021) in the municipality's respective Public Health Unit.
According the ministers' responses during the press conference, the funding is coming from a "mixture of funds" including federal support from the Safe Restart Agreement which the Province contributed to as well as other Provincial funding sources. The ministers' also urged the federal government to partner with the Province to continue to support municipalities.
In addition, the allocations will be given out in installments with one expected on May 1st and the other expected by November 1st of this year.
Mayor of Bracebridge, Graydon Smith the AMO President attended the announcement welcoming the funding and also thanked municipal public servants who have worked "diligently and quietly" to deliver essental services to residents across Ontario.
