Dear members and clients,
As many of you know, AMCTO utilizes social media as a regular communication tool to engage with you and the broader Ontario municipal community about upcoming programs, Association events and offerings, partner and sector news, and more. Over the past five years, our Association has focused on developing an engaging digital strategy and cultivating online communities across the following platforms: Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and X (formerly Twitter).
With the change in ownership of Twitter in July 2023 and rebranding to X, there have been many changes to the platform’s overall vision and subsequently, its features. These changes have altered how users are engaging with content on the platform, how platform algorithms perform, and how information and misinformation is spreading in real-time.
As an Association, we have seen how these changes have affected other accounts and our own account following with many users no longer active on the platform or choosing to leave it entirely. Over the past two years, we have seen a continuous drop in our overall following and user engagement on X, and it is no longer a platform we feel serves us effectively in reaching or engaging meaningfully with our membership or Ontario municipal sector audience. In addition, the overall discourse from those using the platform does not align with our Association’s values of accountability and transparency, accessibility and inclusion.
For these reasons, as an Association, we have decided to discontinue use of X and will be deactivating our account on the platform as of Tuesday, September 2, 2025.
What does this change mean for you?
While there is no immediate action needed on your part as a member (or X user), we hope that you will continue to follow and engage with us on other social media platforms where we remain active (LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook). In addition, we encourage you to subscribe to our Municipal Minute weekly e-newsletter for all the latest Association news and updates.
If you are an HR professional or someone who has recently posted a featured job ad with us, please note that all featured job ads will now be highlighted as part of our updated Municipal Minute newsletter starting September 3; this is in addition to having your featured job ads included in the regular Thursday job postings email to members, being featured on our job board, and profiled within our LinkedIn group. We believe this change will continue to provide value to you in reaching key audiences of municipal professional candidates. For any specific questions related to this change or our job ad process, please reach out to us at amcto@amcto.com for more information and/or assistance.
At AMCTO, we are committed to keeping you, our members, informed through clear, regular, and open communication. We will continue to review our social media practice and look for ways to continue to build constructive, positive, and meaningful digital engagement. On behalf of the AMCTO staff and Board, thank you for your understanding and support.
Sincerely,
David Arbuckle, MPA
Executive Director, AMCTO
