No, the student is responsible for applying in conjunction with their academic supervisor. Professors are not able to apply, although they are encouraged to share with their students.
No - only students that will graduate on or after September 1, 2026 are eligible.
If it is agreed upon between the student and the host municipality, students can have more visits to the host municipality during the internship than is required.
The opportunity is primarily virtual in nature with the opportunity to bring the student into the municipality up to four times during the eight months. This can be for project work and/or the experiential learning component of the municipal application.
We will not be providing a formal agreement for this purpose but encourage the partners to explore this independently if it applies to their project.
We have made no presumptions as to the number of hours the student should be working per week. The number of hours will be somewhat determined by the role and the demands of the project.
Hours may also fluctuate at different times of the internship due to project needs and student availability. For example, students may have more time between May and August should their school course load diminish during that time.
These are considerations the project lead should make and discuss with the student in advance of the Mitacs application.
The relationship between the student and the municipality is managed by the municipal host. Things like recording time, scheduling, and project check-ins can be determined by the project lead and should be discussed with the student.
Both Mitacs and AMCTO have made every effort to try to collect all Phase 3 relevant information in Phases 1 and 2 to minimize duplication. The full application will be submitted via the Mitacs application portal.
Some new information will be needed at the full application stage, and it is expected that the municipality, student and supervisor will collaborate to complete these forms. All parties will also be required to sign the full Mitacs proposal via a digital signature process in the Mitacs portal.

The program is limited to project applications from municipal governments only.
Since this is a new program for AMCTO, we are not able to provide any perspective on the success of previous submissions. For more information on the Mitacs programs which these positions will ultimately be funded under, please see:
Students cannot participate in a municipal project if they are already employed by that municipality during the internship timeframe (January through August 2026). Conflicts may also exist if a student is a current or returning employee of the project municipality and/or the student has family members directly involved with the municipal project.
Any students that are matched with a municipality that they have a pre-existing working relationship with will be required to complete a Mitacs Intern Eligibility and Conflict of Interest Declaration Form at Phase 3 (Mitacs Application). Please contact us for any further questions related to student eligibility.
