Just nine days after the swearing-in of a new federal ministry, on March 23 Governor General Mary Simon accepted Prime Minister Mark Carney's request to dissolve parliament. A federal election will be held on April 28, 2025, to elect members of the House of Commons to the 45th Canadian Parliament.
At just 36 days, this campaign period is the shortest allowed under federal legislation. This will also be the first election to use a new 343-seat electoral map, an increase of five seats since the last election.
The federal government is now in the ‘caretaker period’, which by convention means that the government is to exercise restraint, and activity should be limited to matters that are routine, non-controversial, urgent and in the public interest, reversible by a new government without undue cost or disruption, or agreed to by opposition parties. However, government operations continue during this period and the duties of ministers of the Crown continue to be fulfilled.
As an Association, we will monitor federal parties’ platforms for topics of municipal relevance.
