The Law Commission of Ontario (LCO) with the Ontario Human Rights Commission has released a co-developed assessment tool “to identify, assess, minimize or avoid discrimination and uphold human rights obligations throughout the lifecycle of an AI system.” According to the LCO, AI impact assessments (AIAs) have become a leading practice in promoting “trustworthy AI”. However, these AIAs have considered issues and impacts related to data security and privacy but have not considered human rights.
As more municipalities grapple with how to effectively manage AI's impacts on their organizations, this tool may help them understand how AI works more generally, and how applications that embed AI tools can impact human rights obligations.
We are adding this resource to our members-only curated sector research and reports webpage. We hope to have more AI-related tools and resources included in these lists in the future.
