Metroland Media Group recently announced its intention to cease print publication of over 70 newspapers across the province. As our members know well, various statutes and regulations require that municipalities provide notice to the public in a newspaper. The announcement from Metroland means that many municipalities no longer have a printed newspaper in their community.
Given the significance and scale of these recent closures, we wrote to Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Paul Calandra on September 26th to seek his ministry’s guidance and clarification as it relates to the challenges this presents for local government professionals. We will keep our members informed of any direction from government on this.
