Director of Legislative Services & Town Clerk
Town of Erin
"Delivering services directly to residents confirmed that local government was the path for me."
About Me:
Halfway through my term as Director at Large for the AMCTO Board of Directors in 2021, I welcomed my second son, Aleks. I continued to serve the rest of the term with my little guy by my side. Aleks joined me for his first Board meeting when he was only three weeks old. I feel grateful for AMCTO for the support and empowerment that allowed me to continue to serve my term, while balancing the needs of a newborn. A gentle reminder to all moms that, with the right support, we can continue to fulfill all the roles that nourish and empower us.
Why did you get involved with/pursue a career in local government?
My career in local government came intuitively to me. I was inspired at a young age by my dad's journey in fire service. My immigration journey to Canada shaped my core beliefs, reinforcing the importance of delivering services to wide and diverse demographics. While pursuing my degree in political science, I worked various roles for parks and recreation with the Town of Oakville. That experience marked a cornerstone for me - delivering services directly to residents confirmed that local government was the path for me.
What is one thing members of the public would be surprised to learn about your role?
My role as Director of Legislative Services and Clerk includes oversight of four business units: clerks, human resources, information technology and bylaw enforcement. This means that on any given day, I am preparing a council agenda, coordinating digital transformation initiatives, empowering our motivated workforce, while enforcing the Town's regulatory bylaws. While they may be busy, my days at the Town of Erin are extremely fulfilling and I enjoy the variety of challenges my role is able to assist with.
What do you enjoy most about working in local government?
There's a lot that I like about working for local government - probably the biggest thing is the impact that you leave on your communities. I've had the opportunity to work for both small and large municipalities and they each bring a lot of different excitement. In smaller municipalities, by necessity you typically get involved in a lot more duties than than you signed up for, which can be very rewarding. In bigger municipalities, you get to focus on innovation and you have a little bit more resources to work with. For me, local government is most rewarding because of the direct impact municipal employees have on the residents and communities where we work.
