The Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario (IPC) and the Ontario Human Rights Commission (OHRC) have developed joint principles to guide the responsible adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) systems.
According to the IPC, these principles are designed to help organizations develop, deploy, and use AI in ways that maintain public trust by respecting privacy and human rights. The principles are:
- Valid and reliable
- Safe
- Privacy protective
- Human rights affirming
- Transparent
- Accountable
As many municipalities consider how to best integrate and regulate AI use within their jurisdictions, this principles-based guide may serve as a helpful resource.
As an Association, through our submission to update MFIPPA and our submission on the Strengthening Cyber Security and Building Trust in the Public Sector Act, 2024 we have called on the government to adopt principles-based approaches and a legislative framework when it comes to cybersecurity and artificial intelligence. We have also called on the government to offer municipal-specific training on these topics.
